bistro dining table in sunny window in margate

Us at Fort Road Hotel is open Thursday - Monday

Us (from Margate’s award winning POMUS team) has taken over the dining options at Fort Road Hotel, running weekend brunches and evening dining seven days a week. It’s fast become a popular spot for low key catch ups, when you want more than burgers and less fuss than small plate fusion cooking.

The menu

Hotel classics done well, with barbequed meat and fish dishes being the stand out - that would be my one line take for Us’ menu.

From good olives and oysters with strawberry vinaigrette to a Caesar Salad, pork chop and peppercorn sauce or a monkfish tail with grenoblaise, this isn’t small plates but the kind of modern bistro cooking everyone in the family will find something to love, and you’ll end up coming back almost weekly because the food’s delicious, the restaurant’s welcoming and it doesn’t feel like you have to save it for a special occasion.

The small but might dessert menu is a treat and regularly changes but they do a mean lemon meringue tart and some form of chocy mousse.

Us have also introduced a strong brunch menu, with healthy (fruit salad, steak and eggs) and indulgent options (chicken and waffles, breakfast Martinis) at weekends for a proper holiday vibe.

The drinks

POMUS has made a name for itself across Margate for interesting low intervention wines that change regularly, championing English sparkling wines and offering some fab options by the glass, which is great for a midweek tipple. At Us, there’s also a fabulous homemade cherry soda on the menu that’s incredibly moreish.

The week’s wines are chalked up over the fireplace or you can go all in with Martinis and classic cocktails.

The vibes

The dining space at Us feels cosy but still like a treat. In the summer, the evening sun streams through the front of the hotel, everyone looks good and you can follow your meal with a glass of wine outside on the hill, overlooking the Turner and the famous Margate sunset. It’s civilised, not stuffy, and the front of house staff are charming and on it (even when the other day we got our booking time wrong!)
