Seabird Margate

Have you popped into Seabird yet?

Seabird has flown the coop in Ramsgate and landed in Margate, taking over one of the busiest spots in Margate’s Old Town.

They’ve revamped Margate Coffee Shed with a wider offering, smarter execution and so far - I’ve popped in half a dozen times already, they’ve got some fantastic waiting and front of house staff - which let’s face it, is often the hardest thing to achieve.

The menu

You might have loved Margate Coffee Shed but it’s great to see a new menu find some love, with a dedicated breakfast and separate lunch menu up for grabs. Seabird then changes again and offers up small plates in the evenings to go with their cocktail menu, but for now - I was there for lunch.

How many times do you just grab whatever is closest to hand for lunch? It actually felt like a mini holiday to meet up with a friend and sit down to a proper lunch, basking in the sunshine and business of Margate Old Town on a summery weekday.

So to business - we demolished a Bookmaker toast and a Plaice Schitzel between us but I was sorely tempted by a beautiful gazpacho (for a cooling lunch in a heatwave) and the wild mushroom crumpet looked delicious (for anyone missing a loaded crumpet).

Back to the Bookmaker Toast - essentially a dec obstructed steak sambo with a fried egg and greenery which was crunchy, gooey and oh so tasty. The plaice schnitzel and pickled red cabbage salad felt like a healthier take on having fried fish for lunch (as much as I love Peter’s) but special enough we both sat there basking in the joy of making time to do a proper lunch.

We followed up sharing a pastel de nata, full of flaky bite and creamy custard, as it should be.

The drinks

Seabird aren’t shy of serving booze at lunch - there are seasonal cocktails and the Seabird take on martinis, espresso martinis and the classics, low intervention wine by the glass and non-alcoholic spritzes to be had. I plumped for a gorgeous foraged soda - hello wild rhubarb and meadowsweet but was sorely tempted by a Brad Pitt, the house Old Fashioned.

I have to say - Seabird’s espresso tonic with vanilla was the perfect pick me up to power me back home post lunch slump.

Seabird is now open until 9pm so you can kick back and enjoy a drink in the evening, sitting under their smart striped awning and watching the world go by.

The vibes

Forget what you think you know about what was here before. Yes the layout is overall the same, but Seabird works much harder at being an all day space, with menus and drinks to match. Plus there's an incredible sound system, properly curated music and live DJs and evening tunes to come.

Seabird is open every day of the week. Pop in Sun - Wed 9am - 9pm and Thu - Sat 9am - 10pm.
