Find POM on the Harbour Arm in Margate
On a baking hot Bank Holiday weekend in Margate, you can’t beat sitting by the water, and while a picnic is nice, a spot on the harbour arm, with an array of delicious snacks and chilled wine in front of you - is better.
POM totally delivers on this front.
It’s the baby sister of POMUS, across the Main Sands, off the High Street, in Margate and it takes some of the most popular small plates from there and combines them with ‘good olives’, picky bits and more to deliver a compact menu, but one’s that’s perfect for a little sharing in the sunshine.
POM’s menu is compact but delicious with regular changing natural and local wines
The menu
Margate’s not short of people who love anchovies but POM’s are things of symmetrical beauty. Beautifully laid out in a puddle of rosemary flavoured oil, they hit the salty note perfectly.
I teamed them with some carrot hummus (mostly because I wanted bread to slather in things), which was delicious and balanced out the naughty but so good chicken karaage with togardashi and maple which POMUS has become locally famous for.
Also on the menu is fritto misto, and it felt super generously portioned. No tiny tiny squid here deep fried to a crisp but chunky bits of fish and shellfish in proper batter with squid ink and lemon.
Fritto misto anyone? Take your picnic lunch in the sunshine up a level
The drinks
Natural and British wines abound here (on tap and in bottle) but POM keeps things simple with a glass or carafe option for white, orange, rose and a chilled red that really hits the spot (def my summer fave so far).
Or choose a British sparkling wine, sour cherry negroni or there’s a couple of spritzes on offer. POMUS has a regularly changing wine menu, from low intervention and small batch vineyards so it’s worth asking what’s on offer, the team are always happy to help find the perfect pour.
The vibes
It’s Margate’s harbour arm, so you’re in amongst it all, soaking up the views, the sunshine, the music and - sometimes the madness. Revel in one of the best spots in town, congratulate your good decision to stop and have lunch outside, and toast Margate, the coolest town on the Kent coast.
Pop into the Turner afterwards, then continue up the coast for the best beaches in town and a cooling swim.
