Don’t Miss: Bridget Riley at The Turner

One of Britain’s most influential living artists, Bridget Riley, is returning to the Kent coast this winter with Learning to See, a major new exhibition at The Turner that promises to make you, quite literally, look again.

Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, the show explores Riley’s lifelong fascination with colour, rhythm and perception, tracing her connection to the natural world — from her early black-and-white optical works to her most recent wall paintings and canvases.

The title, Learning to See, is inspired by Monet’s famous letter to Eugène Boudin thanking him for teaching him “to see and understand,” a perfect nod to Riley’s own lifelong study of the sensory act of looking.

Expect iconic works from the 1960s alongside new paintings like Pharaoh (2024) and Silvered Painting 2 (2023), all installed to respond to Turner Contemporary’s light-filled architecture and the changing sea and skies of Margate beyond the glass.

Alongside the exhibition, Turner is transforming its Clore Learning Studio into a year-long Drawing Studio, offering free and paid workshops, creative sessions and schools’ programmes that invite everyone to pick up a pencil and explore how drawing helps us connect with the world.

A special in-conversation between Bridget Riley and writer Michael Bracewell about Claude Monet will also be announced soon.
