What is The Margate Cup?
For a town with a huge number of exceptional independent cafes, it’s taken Margate a while to figure out a way to combat the high level of takeaway coffee cups post Covid, that are used and tossed every day.
Across the UK on average every day 7 million single use coffee cups are used and they take hundreds of years to break down thanks to their complex mix of paper and plastic materials.
New for 2024 is The Margate Cup, which was launched by Oast Bakery in Cliftonville, along with Plastic Free Thanet, as a way to encourage reusables and slow down the tide of single use.
The simple lightweight grey and white reusable cup made from 100% recycled plastic is perfect for a flat white on the go, but won’t weigh you down like many of the glass reusable cups will.
It will last for 500 uses and can be washed and returned to your bag to go again easily.
Or it can be easily recycled or alternatively you can return it to Oast Bakery and get your deposit back.
The cup costs £2.50, is not-for-profit and generates a small donation to Margate’s local beach cleaning charity, Rise Up Clean Up.
