Tamara Campbell: Don’t Miss My Margate

Welcome to our new interview series, My Margate, which uncovers the very best gems that Margate has to offer.

And who’s better to do that, than some of the most talented people in town - from award-winning poets to drag kings, DJs, influencers, artists and baristas.

Our latest interview in the My Margate series is Deputy Mayoress Tamara Campbell.

first things first, let’s get you introduced

Tamara Campbell is Tamara Campbell! I've been told I'm always doing something, I guess I don't notice because I love what I do.

What do you do in Margate?

I'm a big fan of Margate and have become an ambassador for the area in many ways.

Whether it be through community organisation support, getting people outdoors and moving or being the deputy mayoress of margate, I'm always up for delivering the goods.

Watch this space!

What brought you here? Or have you always been here?

I came to Margate for the sunset by the sea three years ago and I stayed for the community you can't quite find anywhere else.

What makes Margate magic for you?

Everything feels possible, Margate has that effect on people.

Seeing what people can do for themselves and others is really inspiring and being part of this developing community brings me joy which makes me want to give back as much as I can.

What’s Your favourite shop?

My favourite shop would have to be The Bike Shed. These guys really know their stuff and will look after you time and time again.

What’s your favourite way to spend a Saturday or Sunday here?

I would have to say maybe a long bike ride or hike ending with my favourite chocolate, coconut and charcoal ice-cream. Then definitely some time to myself to recharge.

Read all about our favourite ice creams in Margate.

Who is your Margate legend?

I would have to say the historian and artist Dr Peter A Nicholls and People Dem Collective.

Peter has been quietly working at reclaiming our histories of the sunken slave ships off the coasts of Margate with the aim to sharing the knowledge and repair what's broken. Through art, music, dialogue and rituals at the new People Dem collective headquarters, the community is invited to get involved. Check out www.peopledemcollective.com for more information.
