Georgie Roberton: Don’t Miss My Margate

Welcome to our new interview series, My Margate, which uncovers the very best gems that Margate has to offer.

And who’s better to do that, than some of the most talented people in town - from award-winning poets to drag kings, DJs, influencers, artists and baristas.

Our latest interview in the My Margate series is vintage clothing seller and stylist, Georgie Roberton

Georgie Roberton is the founder of Peony Vintage

first things first, let’s get you introduced

I’m Georgie Roberton.

What do you do in Margate?

I am the founder of Peony Vintage - a curated vintage womenswear brand.

I used to have a shop in the old town in Margate but now sell mainly online via IG and my website, at markets (Margate Old Town Market) and pop ups. I LOVE sourcing fresh vintage!

What brought you here? Or have you always been here?

I moved here from Canterbury 10 years ago and I have never looked back. It became a haven for me. I’ve seen so many amazing things open, evolve, move on and met so many incredible people in those years. I’m very lucky to be here that’s for sure

What makes Margate magic for you?

It feels like a place of feels - the community have either always been here or relocated here to find peace, community, sunsets and kindness.

What’s Your favourite shop?

I adore Zoe Murphy’s studio store on Hawley Street and Opal on Fort Road.

Both Zoe and Meg are incredibly skilful makers and both spaces are treasure troves of skilful and beautiful curation of gorgeous things for you, your home or for gifts.

What’s your favourite way to spend a Saturday or Sunday here?

My ideal Sunday would be a coffee from Afterparty, and a trip to the farmer’s market at Walpole Bay.

A wander into town for a drink at Little Swift and maybe some lunch at Curve or Thao Thao, followed by a Carlton Cinema trip in Westgate and back home to get a meal on using things from the market.

Who is your Margate legend?

I have so many! And they usually do many different things - the barista who is also an artist, the barmaid who is also a singer, the delivery driver who is also a florist - I respect and admire the great big hustle, the work ethic, the ability to be flexible here, engage in community and do lots of different things to create the life you want!

What’s your Don’t Miss Margate tip?

Do the Xylo Pub Quiz at least once! it’s just amazing and so much fun.
